Casey Viera(September 6, 2013) Just because you don’t get the job today doesn’t mean you won’t get it tomorrow. Casey Viera can testify to that. A year after coming up short in his pursuit of a sports anchor position at WGGB-TV in Springfield, MA, Viera has been hired by the ABC/Fox affiliate in the same position.

“It’s funny, actually,” Viera says. “Last year, I applied for an on-air job there and I didn’t get it. Fast-forward to basically a year later. I get an email from the previous sports director saying that there’s an open position. I applied, drove to the station’s door and landed an interview with the station manager on the spot. After two of the longest weeks of my life sitting on every phone call and email, I found myself with the job.”

In his new gig, Viera will be serving as a nightly sports anchor and host/producer for several of WGGB’s seasonal high school specials. “Our network is the TV source for high school sports in Western Mass, so there will be plenty of coverage on that front. Come playoff time, we’ll be at Fenway, Foxboro and TD Bank (the New Yorker in me refuses to call it “The Garden”) covering the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics.

Viera is looking forward to working in a fun and enthusiastic market while covering high school, collegiate and professional sports. “It makes the job so much more fun when you have these kinds of fan bases and that’s exactly what I have here. Not many people are presented with a chance likes this, especially at my age, so I feel incredibly fortunate for that.”

Viera has been an STAA client since 2011. “[My STAA Talent Page] helped a whole lot from an organizational standpoint,” says Viera. “Employers only entertain your application for a minute or two (if that), so having everything available at the click of a button with the STAA page is crucial.”
