As a kindergartner, Spencer Pattison would wake up daily at 6 am to watch SportsCenter. “I loved sports and liked to keep up with the news on all of my favorite teams and players,” he recalls. Pattison and a friend even made their own SportsCenter set in Pattison’s backyard. “We would pretend to be the anchors, reporters, announcers, and players.”
Pattison has been sportscasting ever since. His newest opportunity is with the Down East Bird Dawgs of independent baseball’s Frontier League. He is joining the team as Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations.

Growth opportunity
“This position presents an exciting opportunity for me to begin my career broadcasting professional baseball while learning from [General Manager] Shari Massengill and [Assistant GM] Janell Fitch, who have been working in the baseball industry for many years. I also get to return to a state I really enjoyed living in and has such deep rooted baseball history.”
Pattison has spent the past two seasons calling summer collegiate baseball, first as an intern with the Morehead City Marlins, then last summer with the Sherman (TX) Shadowcats. It was a Morehead City connection that led him to the Bird Dawgs. “During my time as a Broadcast and Media Relations Intern for the Morehead City Marlins in 2023, I had the opportunity to connect with Chris Edwards, who was the broadcaster for the Holly Springs Salamanders at the time. We stayed in touch, and he later informed me about a new team launching in Kinston. Thanks to his recommendation, I was introduced to [Shari Massengill].
Connections
Several things helped Pattison’s pursuit of the Down East position. “I maintained strong connections in North Carolina, including my former boss at the Marlins, Buddy Bengal, who served as a valuable reference. I am always striving to make each broadcast better than the last, which I think has helped me refine my skills, in order to be considered for an opportunity like this. Lastly, most broadcasters will agree that searching for a job in this industry can be mentally taxing. I prioritized my faith and trusted that God would guide me in the right direction.”
Pattison graduated from the Colorado Media School in Denver in 2023. He joined STAA shortly thereafter. “One of my former instructors and mentor, Julio Rausseo (also an STAA member), informed me about STAA and showed me the resources that came with the membership.”
Pattison hasn’t stopped broadcasting since graduating from CMS. In addition to baseball, his resume includes play-by-play for seven other high school and college sports in Colorado and Texas. Now though, instead of pretending to be an announcer in his backyard, he’s broadcasting sports for a career.
