(September 10, 2013) Dave Schultz has long aspired to be a sports radio program director. Now, he is getting his opportunity. An STAA client, Shultz has been hired as PD/Morning Drive Host at KLWB 103.7 FM The Game in Lafayette, LA.
Schultz has been working in the private sector since leaving his host/anchor/reporter job at WQAM in Miami in 2011.
“While I was anxious to get back into broadcasting, I was looking for a specific type of market,” Schultz says. “I expected to be in a small to medium market, but wanted it to have a passionate fan base. I figured ‘major league’ sports were basically out of the picture. I thought a market dominated by a major college program could do the trick. However, being out of radio for over two years, I knew accomplishing that goal would prove tricky. I feel extremely fortunate for the opportunity with The Game. Along with the Rajin Cajuns of ULL, I’m only an hour from Baton Rouge and LSU. Mission accomplished!”
103.7 The Game is currently building a new studio that should be completed in the next few months. They are also looking to broadcast shows live on their TV station and/or have the ability to record digital content for live streaming options online.
The opportunity to work in Lafayette came when Delta Media’s Director of Operations Erik Tobias contacted STAA seeking candidates. “I was told about the opening through the STAA Job Openings email,” Shultz says. “I applied on a Friday, interviewed on Sunday and Monday, then was offered the job and accepted on Wednesday. It happened fast.”
Schultz has been an STAA client since May 2012. “On top of the invaluable advice [STAA CEO] Jon Chelesnik has given me, sending out links to my STAA Talent page is eminently easier than bulky audio files. I sincerely believe STAA is a fantastic tool for broadcasters. I only wished it was around when my career started. Thanks for everything Jon.”
Schultz recommends patience and persistence to other sportscasting job seekers. “If this is something you really want to do, and I include myself in that, keep at it. Stay in touch with all of your contacts and do your best to never burn a bridge. I know these are cliches, but they are true. I’ve let all of my recent rejections know about my new position. You just never know when they may be in touch.”
