(August 27, 2913) In sports, the more positions you can play the more valuable you are to your team. The same is true in sports broadcasting. It is Mike Pilch’s versatility that has led him to his next opportunity. An STAA client Pilch is joining The Big 1070 and News/Talk 1310 WIBA in Madison, WI.
Pilch will fill a variety of roles for the Clear Channel stations, including news and sports update anchor, University of Wisconsin Badger Radio Network anchor, Green Bay Packers reporter, and local play-by-play broadcaster.
“It’s in a great sports market in a college town,” Pilch says with a grin.
The opportunity came to Pilch on a tip from a friend who works in the market. “He mentioned my name to some people and they called immediately after hearing my work,” Pilch says. “The whole process from the first time we made contact to the time I started didn’t take long at all.”
Pilch advises other sportscasting job seekers to persevere and be willing to wear many hats. “It’s ultra competitive and you have to make the most of your contacts. And show people you are flexible and can work hard. If you are willing to work hard for people and be willing to do anything for them they will give you more opportunities.
“There are many people out there with loads of talent that just haven’t been given a break yet or met the right people. You just have to keep plugging away and things will happen.”
