New York State American Legion Baseball Championship--Broadcast Director

The Kingston-Saugerties American Legion Baseball team (19u) is hosting the New York State American Legion Baseball Championship at Cantine Field in Saugerties, NY July 23-28.

Home of the Saugerties Stallions of the Perfect Game Baseball League, Saugerties is a small town with a HUGE baseball heart.

We are looking for people interested in this volunteer resume building experience.

Specific responsibilities would include the coordination of the Live Broadcast of baseball games via Facebook live, and calling play-by-play for multiple games per day. Introduction of the teams and Opening Ceremony begins on July 23, with games beginning July 24. Pending playoffs and weather, games may conclude July 28.

This is an excellent opportunity for a college student, graduate, or industry Professional that wants to give a “Big Show” feel to local New York State American Legion Championship Baseball. Broadcast experience and coordination a plus.

A thought about this. There will certainly be someone that will jump on this, and maybe it gives them something that is needed for their personal resume-and that's great. However, I do think the ask of having someone do this completely for free is way too much.

I'd think differently if the request was simply to find some play-by-play announcers to show up and call games. And even then there's the preparation/legwork that is needed to call a proper broadcast. There's nothing wrong with someone that needs reps taking a volunteer spot for a tournament if it's going to get them a bunch of games and tape in a short period.

However, based on the ad and the search for a "broadcast Director" that is looking for a "Big Show" feel, this is either an extreme misunderstanding of the labor actually required (it's not just calling the games, it's the entire video production - cameras (and camera operators), sound, graphics, control room staff, proper bandwidth/Internet. It's the kind of thing that could take several additional weeks of labor to coordinate, which then is much more than calling games for a week.

Or (and maybe what is more likely to happen), it's one person w/a camera behind home plate streaming a play-by-play feed (which is fine, but it's not a "Big Show" - which is also fine, provided proper expectations are set).

That's the rub - is it really one week of time, or much more than that. If you're asking someone to call games and then do an entirely other job that may take a few weeks of F/T (or close to it) labor to pull off, then that time should be paid for, or at the very least, prepare for a much smaller production - maybe with more volunteers helping - so that its more in line with a p/t experience vs. a full-time job.
