Want to know how to call a no-hitter/perfect game? Vin Scully, 1965, Koufax. Listen to the 9th. That's how you do it.

If you're a player, you don't say a word about it in that dugout and you don't talk to the pitcher.

If you're a broadcaster, tell me what is happening. Otherwise you're doing a disservice. You know why people think broadcasters jinx no-hitters? Because a no-hitter is really hard to pull off. Like...REALLY hard to pull of. So more often than not, it's not going to happen. Has nothing to do with us jamokes in the booth. And because it's so hard to pull off and it IS such a rarity (AND IT IS A RARITY, despite the sudden rash of them these last few years), you better make sure you let your audience know that it is happening because they deserve to know.

Brian Anderson repeatedly mentioned that Roy Halladay was throwing one in the NLDS a couple of years ago. Did Halladay lose the no-hitter? No. Because he was going to throw one regardless of who in the booth said it. Now if his catcher runs up to him and yells, "Hey Roy! You haven't given up a hit and it's the 8th!!!" then that directly affects the pitcher. You don't do that. You know who doesn't affect whether or not Jay Bruce walks or Halladay misses outside with a fastball? Us idiots wearing a headset. Don't be an egomaniac, thinking that you directly affect what happens on the field. Cause you don't.

And anyone who argues about the tradition of baseball and whatnot, Scully (to most of us and anyone who has ever lived in LA) is as much a part of baseball history than anyone or anything else. So if it's ok with him to say "no-hitter" or "perfect game" so the audience knows what is happening, then it's ok for me, too.
