(August 19, 2015) People can make a work place great. It is why Kailey Mizelle is especially excited about her new opportunity. An STAA member, Mizelle is joining KLBK/KAMC TV in Lubbock, TX as a sports reporter.
“After talking to the News Director and Sports Director, it seemed like the perfect opportunity,” says Mizelle. “They are smart and driven and I know they will make me a better reporter. It’s also nice to hear that it’s a comfortable, friendly newsroom where everyone gets along and is happy.”
Much of Mizelle’s professional reporting experience has come in minor league baseball. She has been spending this summer as a reporter/MMJ with the Clearwater Threshers. Two years ago, she was with the East Texas Pump Jacks. Mizelle spent the 2014 season in a non-broadcasting position with the Montgomery Biscuits.
Since last year, the University of Florida graduate has also been working for a video production company.
One job market challenge that Mizelle repeatedly faced was not having as much experience as some employers preferred.
“It’s something that is very frustrating when you’re going through it, but to overcome it you just have to keep pushing, asking for advice, and reaching out to as many people as possible,” she says. “At some point someone aside from you and your parents will believe in you and give you the chance.”
