Matt Dean has been broadcasting baseball for years. He’s a native of Wisconsin, though, and a Wisconsin Badger. So it makes sense he also loves hockey. Now, he’ll be calling the sport on a regular basis. An STAA member, Dean is the new hockey voice at Minnesota State University.
The opening was sent to STAA members June 19th. It was not posted publicly.
Dean has been the voice of Triple-A baseball’s St. Paul Saints since 2023. He’s also made Minor League Baseball stops with the Charleston RiverDogs and Fayetteville Woodpeckers. On TV, Dean has broadcast various high school sports for North Metro TV in Blaine, MN.
Educated at University of Wisconsin, Dean earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Life Sciences Communications & Ag Business Management in 2015. He began his broadcasting career with the Charleston RiverDogs (Single-A, New York Yankees) in Charleston, South Carolina as Director of Broadcasting & Media Relations from 2015-19.
Dean follows Mike Sullivan at Minnesota State. Sullivan retired after 24 seasons with the Mavericks.
“Not only is it an opportunity to call Division I hockey, but also a chance to broadcast games for a top-tier program,” Dean smiles. He adds, “I step into some big shoes left behind by a legendary broadcaster in Mike Sullivan.”
