(March 12, 2012) Curt Lowe is thrilled to finally be getting paid to do play-by-play. An STAA client, Lowe has been hired as a play-by-play broadcaster and account executive for KDLS-AM/FM in Perry, IA.
For the first 10 years of his play-by-play career, Lowe has always had to get his own sponsors in order to get his games on the air. He smiles broadly when he says, “This is the first time I’ve ever been paid to be a play-by-play announcer.”
Lowe moves to Perry, roughly 30 miles west of Des Moines, from Sarasota, Florida. He has spent the past six years as General Sales Manager & Sports Director at The Sports Fanatic, AM 1280 in Sarasota
Upon learning of the KDLS job through an email from STAA, Lowe immediately knew it was one he wanted. “It was play-by-play and sales, and not sales and PBP. My main focus is going to be on the play-by-play. By the same token, I have to make sure the games get sold. We’re doing football, basketball baseball and softball. We’re doing it all.”
As a former employer himself, Lowe has read countless cover letters. “They mostly all look the same,” he says. With that in mind, Lowe wrote what turned out to be a unique and effective cover letter. “When I called to follow-up my letter, they knew who I was,” Lowe grins.
Lowe drove 1,500 miles from Sarasota to Perry to interview for the job and paid for it out of his own pocket. “They were very impressed by that, he says.”
As impressed as the station is with Lowe, he is equally impressed with them. “These guys are real serious about doing sports because they know the schools are the identity of the town itself.
“It’s a really good organization. I couldn’t be happier.”
