Recent college grads feeling doubt when the sportscasting job market doesn’t unfold quickly is common. It’s how Keller Sherman has felt since graduating from Southern Utah University in May. “I put in applications to entry level positions I saw on STAA job leads emails throughout the spring and summer,” he recalls. Eventually, one of those applications came through. Sherman is joining New Media Broadcasters in Havre, MT as an On-Air / Multimedia Production / Play-by-Play personality.

“I was looking for a way to break into the sports radio industry and this felt like the right opportunity,” Sherman states. “While waiting for a few days to hear back on a job that would require such a relocation, I handed it off to God knowing that if I got this job, it was in His hands and that this was a part of His plan. That led me to accept this position and believe in Him that He will deliver and use me well here in Havre.”

Sherman joined STAA in March after STAA Owner Jon Chelesnik did a Zoom with Sherman’s broadcasting class. “I joined, and though I tend to be a quiet one having only posted twice [in the STAA Member Community] since joining last spring, I enjoy reading up on others’ experiences in this field as I am just now breaking into it. The job leads emails were a vital part in me landing this job which I do not believe I would have gotten without STAA. I am grateful for that.”

Sherman applied for the Havre opportunity immediately after learning about it. He did a phone interview the next day. “I feel that just my college experience in general helped position myself for this opportunity the best. My experience with Adobe Audition especially helped me to stand out amongst other candidates.”

He adds, “I’m thrilled to have secured my first job out of college and cannot wait to get started in this field.”
