After 19 years in the same place, John Leahy was ready for a change. The veteran broadcaster is the new radio voice of Mass Lowell hockey.

“The River Hawks have a long tradition of excellence that I am thrilled to embrace and be a part of,” Leahy stated in a press release.

Leahy follows Bob Ellis, who retired after 40 years as Voice of the River Hawks. Like Ellis, Leahy knows longevity. He has been the radio and TV voice of Merrimack College hockey since 2005.

Leahy has also been an STAA member since the company’s founding in 2006.

While at Merrimack, Leahy served as a rinkside reporter for ESPNU and called games at Boston’s Fenway Park and TD Garden. Of course, he also knows Hockey East. His book “Breakaway Wisdom,” promotes the conference, as does his weekly radio segment in Concord, N.H.

Leahy is also an accomplished minor league baseball broadcaster, including many seasons with the Lowell Spinners.
