Jason Kempf has touched most of the rungs in his 12 year climb up the Minor League Baseball ladder. From where he is now, he can see the Majors on the horizon. An STAA member since 2013, Kempf is the new Director of Broadcasting for Triple-A’s Iowa Cubs.

He follows fellow STAA member Alex Cohen in the position. Cohen left the position last fall for the Chicago Cubs TV team.

“The I-Cubs have had a tremendous run of excellence in the broadcast booth over several decades and I am honored to take on the challenge of continuing that standard,” Kempf said in a press release.

Kempf’s winding career started with an internship with the Saint Paul Saints, back when they were an independent league team. It continued through Wichita, Dayton, Quad Cities and Charleston, where he spent the past five seasons with the RiverDogs. Charleston was his first full-time opportunity. Patience has been one of Kempf’s biggest virtues.

“I think everyone gets stressed when they are applying for jobs and haven’t heard anything back on many of them, but sometimes you just have to sit back, trust your work and let the process play out,” he told STAA in 2020.

In the same 2020 story Kempf added, “I have been with STAA since I graduated college and it has been extremely helpful ever since. I still get a little tinge of excitement every time an email pops up from Jon with job leads. Even if you aren’t actively looking for a job, it is fun to see what is out there. There are also a tremendous amount of resources included that can help you no matter what sport or sports you call.”

After years of steady climbing, Kempf now finds himself just one rung from the Majors. With each step, he has demonstrated patience, perseverance, and talent. Now, as he takes his place in the I-Cubs booth, the next rung is within his reach.
