(August 12, 2015) Keith Raad was in an enviable position in minor league baseball broadcasting – one for which it would take a truly unique opportunity for him to leave. The unique opportunity arose and Raad is joining ESPN Radio WPIE in Ithaca, NY as a sportscaster and multimedia specialist.
Even though play-by-play, anchoring, reporting and hosting will all be among Raad’s responsibilities, accepting the position was not a slam-dunk. Raad has been spending this summer as a broadcasting and media relations assistant with the Dayton Dragons, one of the top such positions in Class-A baseball.
“I honestly never believed I would get out of minor league baseball because I truly love the game and the business. Tom Nichols, the Director of Broadcasting/Media Relations at the Dragons, is truly a wonderful teacher and friend,” says Raad.
Raad’s new job will provide outstanding opportunities for growth. “The position I was in with Dayton ended following the season and I was truly looking for fall work. Though there was a lot of second-guessing [about taking the ESPN job] because of my commitment, I felt that this was an opportunity that is rare: a full-time job with a great salary working for a company that is well-run, and a company that was looking for a passionate person ready to grow for the long haul.”
The variety of responsibilities was the tipping point in Raad accepting the Ithaca job.
“I enjoy being involved in every possible function. With this position, I will be doing play-by-play for high school hockey, lacrosse, and Cornell wrestling (which I never thought was something I’d ever run into), live radio updates, features, hosting, reporting, and writing.”
Being closer to home was also attractive to Raad. “To be in my home state with a shorter drive home to see family and friends was too good to pass up.
“There’s so much to this position that I felt like I couldn’t deny the challenge.”
