Johnny KaneJohnny Kane, who currently is sports director at KSNT 27 in Topeka, has been named the new sports director at KMBC 9 News.

His first week on the air will be September 19.

Kane, who will be 31 next week, will replace Nick Griffith, who departed earlier this month for KDVR in Denver.

He joined KSNT in 2006 and is currently doing triple-duty in Topeka as Sports Director for three network affiliates under the umbrella of “Kansas First News”: KSNT, KTMJ and KTKA.

“Johnny’s passion for sports is exciting to watch whether it’s live in the field or in the studio,’ says KMBC 9 News Director, Sherrie Brown. ‘He comes with experience covering both the Chiefs and the Royals.

“He also brings an understanding of the role local sports plays in our community through his work producing and anchoring high school sports shows,’ she adds.

Kane and KSNT were recently honored by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters for “Prime Newscast,” “Prime Sportscast” and “Promotion of High School Football Coverage.”

‘I have thoroughly enjoyed my years in Topeka and look forward to establishing new relationships with the people of Kansas City,” says Kane. “Working alongside Len Dawson, Karen Kornacki, and the rest of the KMBC family will be first-rate!”

Kane joined KSNT after spending two and a half years at WKAG-TV 3 in Hopkinsville, KY.

A native of Ohio, Kane earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University in 2003. He’s worked in newspaper, radio and television during his career.
