(March 8, 2016) Joey Jenkins gets things done more quickly than many people. Less than two years after college, Jenkins has already hosted a daily sports talk show on a commercial radio station, been an assistant program director, and is married. Now Jenkins is taking the next step in his life, joining ESPN Boise.
“I’ll be producing two shows, anchoring live Sportscenter updates, fill-in hosting and reporting on different events,” he says. “I’ll also be assisting our Program Director in creating contest ideas, segment ideas, and helping create content that can generate higher ratings and raise revenue.”
A 2014 graduate of the University of Idaho, Jenkins moves to Boise from Moscow, ID, where he spent the past five years as a host, play-by-play broadcaster and assistant program director. Those Boise opportunity came when the station called to gauge his interest in working for them.
“This is a good move for me because it’s a good move for my family. That sounds cheesy, but being a married man, I also have to consider my wife’s thoughts and feelings when we decide to move to a new market,” says Jenkins.
Jenkins knows the move to ESPN Boise is also a good fit professionally. “Their imaging, their talent, and their philosophy all fit well with my style of hosting and my on-air and off-air abilities and talents. I never want to work for a station that I don’t personally care about or am not invested in. I’m not interested in just jumping ship for a market number or a paycheck. I care about the people I work for and the kind of station I work for.”
“I’m also excited to stay with the ESPN brand, and having an FM and AM signal is very exciting because of the range of audience we can reach.”
Jenkins has been an STAA member since 2014. “STAA has been invaluable in helping polish my talents. The podcasts, the blog posts, the video interviews — you name it, STAA has helped me become a better host, producer, anchor, reporter and overall sports broadcaster. [STAA’s] ability to help out their clients with feedback, advice, and overall connections has been a wonderful tool for my career. I never plan on leaving STAA.”
