Ex-college baseball star gets radio show

Shane Dennis will have his own sports talk show next week. Starting Oct. 21, “The Shane Dennis Show” will run from 5-7 p.m. weekdays on KFH, 98.7 FM and 1240 AM.

And who is Shane Dennis?

You might remember him best as a left-handed ace for Wichita State, where he earned All-American honors and a spot in the Shocker Hall of Fame. You might know him from his days as Director of Baseball Operations for WSU, where he also did game broadcasts. You might even recall that Dennis was once the voice of the Wichita Wranglers, working alone on air every night in the distant towns of the Texas League.

Opinionated and insightful, Dennis used to ignore Twitter. Luckily for us, he’s now fully engaged. We asked him for an interview, with this twist: The questions and answers would be Tweets only, in 140 characters or less.

Why is your Twitter handle @ShaneDennis37? Didn’t you wear No. 34?

@ShaneDennis37 34, 35, 38, 34, 12, 27, 37 and 22. But I had a picture of my Japanese jersey as my first Twitter profile pic, so I chose ShaneDennis37

You spent a season pitching professionally in Japan, and a season in Triple-A Las Vegas. Which would you like to do again?

@ShaneDennis37 Las Vegas Las Vegas Las Vegas Las Vegas Las Vegas Las Vegas Las Vegas Las Vegas Las Vegas Las Vegas Las Vegas Las Vegas Las Vegas Las Vegas

Was Vegas that good, or was Japan that bad?

@ShaneDennis37 I couldn’t stand Japan. I said at the time I wouldn’t re-up with them for twice the money even if they wanted me back.

@ShaneDennis37 And Vegas is Vegas

What will make this show different from what Wichita sports fans currently have?

@ShaneDennis37 I hope my show will be unique because I’ve been a player, playbyplay, analyst and have a passion for many different sports besides baseball

Who would you like to be your first guest?

@ShaneDennis37 Good question. I’m still weighing that one. If the Tigers make it that far, Andy Dirks maybe. Depending on the sports world, we’ll see

What is your biggest complaint about Wichita as a sports town?

@ShaneDennis37 It’s not a complaint because it has to do with the size of the city, but a major pro sport being here would be awesome

Does Wichita need an affiliated baseball team, or are things fine with the Wingnuts?

@ShaneDennis37 Fine is a relative term, but the Wingnuts are the likely answer, because affiliated ball didn’t stick, despite pleas to keep it in Wichita.

Do you think Wichita State University football will return in your lifetime?

@ShaneDennis37 No

And how does that make you feel?

@ShaneDennis37 Out of sight, out of mind. Used to it not being a part of campus, unfortunately

@ShaneDennis37 That was very psychiatrist-ish of you, btw

Who is your all-time favorite Shocker baseball player?

@ShaneDennis37 Kennie Steenstra. Was a great mentor. Showed me how to get guys out. There’s an art to it. I wasn’t always good at it, but he always was.

What is your favorite memory as a broadcaster?

@ShaneDennis37 My first game with the Wranglers was the most vivid, because I was terrified but thinking “this is it! I’m doing this!” I bet I sucked.

@ShaneDennis37 You gonna write my autobiography?

Between Twitter, watching ESPN, live games, fantasy leagues and your job, how many hours of your week are devoted to sports?

@ShaneDennis37 Let’s see. 24 hours in a day, 7 days a week, I’d say 70. Considering I’m in sales now at KFH, in one fashion or another, that’s conservative

Finally, do you have a message for any of your future podcast listeners in Japan?

@ShaneDennis37 Konnichiwa. Thanks so much for my 4runner, furniture and walking-around money in downtown Tokyo for a couple years.
