(August 30, 2013) Patience is a virtue in the sportscasting job market. Fortunately for Greg Brzozowski, he didn’t have to be patient as long as many job seekers. A 2013 graduate of Elon University, Brzozowski has joined WJHG-TV News Channel 7, the NBC affiliate in Panama City, FL, as a Multimedia Journalist / Weekend Sports Anchor.
An STAA client, Brzozowski, was a 2013 STAA All-American, recognized as the 6th-best collegiate sports broadcaster in the country. He is excited about the opportunity his new job provides to learn and grow as a broadcaster.
“Thanks to the help of a talented, experienced, and dedicated news team and crew, I’ve already gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about achieving success in the business just one week in on the job,” Brzozowski says. “Through this guidance, I can already see growth in my abilities both producing and delivering my sportscasts. As a starter market, I have the privilege of working with a supportive staff and being given great accountability, which is all I could ask for beginning my career.”
Brzozowski learned of the job in one of the emails he receives with his STAA membership. “I remember being in my car at a red light, hearing my phone ring with [STAA CEO] Jon Chelesnik’s email containing the WJHG’s listing, reading the job description, and knowing that I had to send my reel and resume in as soon as possible. A few hours after applying for the job, the sports director called me to further discuss the opportunity.
After spending the past three months in the sportscasting job market, Brzozowski is thrilled to finally be working. “Ever since I was 11, I knew I not only wanted, but needed to work in sports broadcasting. When I was younger, I would hope one day I’d be lucky enough to say covering sports was my occupation. It took a lot of hard work and a lot of breaks, but I’m at the start of my dream and it’s the best feeling in the world!”
Brzozowski adds that covering Florida State, Alabama, Auburn, the rest of the SEC and Florida high school sports gives him a lot of great content to work with. He’s been an STAA client since May.
“I’ve found STAA to be the single best tool out there for sportscasters today, period,” Brzozowski says. “Having the job leads sent early before they’re posted and directly to your email gives clients a direct leg up on the outside competition in an industry where the sooner you’re stuff is in, the better chance you have of it being seen.”
Brzozowski also attended STAA’s “One Day Ticket To Sportscasting Success” seminar in June, an annual event held exclusively for STAA clients. “The seminar was a life changing experience,” he says. “I picked up some of the most important advice about working in this field I’ve ever received and also made connections with fellow sportscasters I’ve been lucky to build relationships with.
“As someone going through the hiring process for the first time, having STAA and Jon Chelesnik to turn to made a world’s of difference. Anytime I needed help, advice, or a question answered, STAA was there, and I’m very grateful for that.”
