(November 13, 2012) After several years of high school play-by-play, Drew Harris is moving up to the collegiate ranks. Harris, an STAA client, is the new play-by-play voice of the University of North Georgia men’s and women’s basketball teams.
UNG, based in Dahlonega, GA, is a member of the Peach Belt Conference.
Harris will continue to do high school football and basketball play-by-play on Newstalk 1350 WRWH.
“It is my first college job. I will be doing these games on top of my usual high school games and the schedules just happen to work out so I will definitely be busy.”
When a local station acquired the rights to broadcast UNG basketball, they put Harris at the top of their list because he had done fill-in play-by-play for the station in the past.
“They liked my basketball play-by-play in the past. They knew I had become an STAA client and thought I was very serious about this profession,” Harris explains.
“They thought it would be a great opportunity for me (for experience) and for them (getting a young, but experienced announcer).”
Harris will also be mentoring UNG sports broadcasting students.
“We will be working with college students in the field of broadcasting at that University, and thought it would be great opportunity for me to help teach and pass along information such as what I learned at [last summer’s STAA sportscasting] seminar.”
