Greg Young joins Carolina Mudcats

greg-young-sportscasting(March 13, 2015) Four years after being a No.1 broadcaster in the California League, Greg Young is back in Class-A baseball as Director of Broadcasting/Media Relations with the Carolina Mudcats.

“The Mudcats have done an outstanding job branding themselves and have a great following,” says Young. “An opportunity to work with such a well respected team and do so as the lead broadcaster was something that I could not hesitate to jump at.”

Young handled broadcasting and media relations for the Modesto Nuts from 2007 through 2011. However, it was his experience last summer working as an assistant to veteran Tennessee Smokies Broadcaster Mick Gillispie that propelled Young to the Carolina job.

“Working with Mick was an invaluable experience that I will always cherish. He taught me how to be a better broadcaster and did so every moment of everyday. He never let a teachable moment slip by without offering career or personal advice. I know I am a better broadcaster for having worked in Tennessee last season and I hope that I am a better person. I would not find myself in this great opportunity with the Mudcats if not for Mick and his efforts during the off-season.”

With Carolina, Young will be doing more than broadcasting and game notes. “I will have a chance to work on my play-by-play abilities, but also pursue the business side of Minor League Baseball. Much of my focus up until now has been on the media, radio and video production side of the industry. I am really looking forward to broadening my skill set with the Mudcats.”

Young’s advice to other minor league baseball job seekers is to stay patient and be prepared to sacrifice. “Obviously, there are financial sacrifices that are required, but more than that I think you need to be ready to make personal sacrifices as well. You have to be willing to check your ego and always put the needs of your team first. Just work hard, listen and learn.”
