Graham lands Sports Director job in Colorado

Josh Graham(July 16, 2015) Josh Graham’s application for one position in Colorado led to him landing a different opportunity in the Mile High State. An STAA member, Graham has been hired as Sports Director at KRDZ 1440 in Wray, CO.

A 2015 graduate of East Carolina University, Graham is excited to broadcast a lot of games in his new position. “I get to do a ton of play-by-play for half a dozen different sports,” he says excitedly.

Graham got the job in Wray after initially applying for the Sports Director position at KSTC in Sterling, CO. Both stations are owned by Media Logic Radio (MLR). The Sterling position went to another STAA member, Dan Lucero. Ironically, Graham and Lucero met just six weeks ago at STAA’s One Day Ticket to Sportscasting Success seminar in North Carolina.

After Lucero was hired in Sterling, MLR President Wayne Johnson told Graham of the Wray opportunity. “He [Johnson] did not advertise the Wray opening just in case he liked more than one candidate for the Sterling job,” says Graham. “He liked my tape and wanted me to visit, so a week later I visited Wray and was offered the job.”

In addition to the play-by-play, Graham is excited to be joining a group of co-workers that he enjoys. “I’ll be joining a team of good people and working under great ownership. That was something I looked for on my visit and it quickly became clear that Wayne Johnson was a tremendous leader and somebody I wanted to work for.”

One thing that Graham learned over the past two months in the sportscasting job market is to be both aggressive and patient. “I was relentless in my job search, but I became frustrated when I hadn’t heard back from many employers for about a month or so — except when they told me that I had not gotten the job.”

While in school at East Carolina, Graham was the news and sports director for the campus radio station. His play-by-play experience included broadcasting games for Pirates women’s basketball and softball. Graham also gained extensive sports talk show hosting experience.
