Max Gershon has already landed two sportscasting jobs since graduating in June from the Dan Patrick School of Broadcasting. He spent the summer calling baseball for the Greeneville Flyboys of the Appalachian Summer League. Now, he’s landed a full-time position as a sports talk host and play-by-play broadcaster for NWK Radio in Colby, KS.
Gershon will co-host a daily sports talk show with fellow STAA member Ross Volkmer, and broadcast a variety of play-by-play.
Help from STAA
“I found the Colby job opening via the STAA job list emails that are sent out regularly,” Gershon states. “I am constantly looking and applying to almost every job that gets posted. After applying to the Colby job at the begging of the month they were quick to reach out to me and schedule an interview.”
Congratulations @Gershon_Max on your new position at NWK Radio! Share on XGershon joined STAA in March, several months before completing his broadcasting curriculum. “I was referred to STAA by [Course Director] Mac McDonald and [Program Director] Gus Ramsey at the Dan Patrick School of Sportscasting. They do such a great job at Full Sail of preparing you for what’s next after college. And thankfully one of the ways they prepared me was joining STAA!”Great memories
Though Gershon is transitioning to radio station employment, he has fond memories of his summer calling Flyboys baseball. It was an opportunity he also found through STAA. “It was an incredible season full of memories and awesome people,” Gershon reminisces. “Getting to call, as well as know, future Japanese sensation Rintaro Sasaki, Vanderbilt commit Brodie Johnston, National Champion Tennessee shortstop Ariel Antigua, and many more was beyond fun and a blessing as well.”
At season’s end, Gershon knew it was time to look for the next opportunity. “In fact even during the season I was still applying for jobs on the STAA website,” he admits.
“I’ve always had a love for sports,” Gershon states. “I played baseball through high school, but when I realized I wasn’t good enough on the field, I decided to pursue sports-broadcasting.”
Local advantage
Being from Leawood, KS boosted Gershon’s application for his new job, though Leawood and Colby are at opposite ends of the Sunflower State. “I think it was very helpful when it comes my pursuit for this Colby position that I had video to show them of me covering Kansas City teams. I always feel that if I can send a job work of me covering teams in that area it will only strengthen the possibly of being hired.”
Besides the job leads that have led Gershon to his first two sportscasting jobs, he appreciates the relationship building that comes with being an STAA member. “What I have told people before about STAA is not only do you get access to job listings around the country, but it’s free networking! There are so many great people that are constantly willing to help, as well as give great resources no matter what part of the industry you are in.”
After a summer of broadcasting baseball, Gershon is eager to move to Colby for the next step of his sportscasting career.
“It has always been a dream of mine to cover my hometown sports teams at any capacity so this made for a perfect fit.”
