Liam Statz was concerned about landing a sportscasting job as he approaches graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point this month. It turns out Statz has a job before he has his diploma. Statz is joining KROX Radio in Crookston, MN as a morning announcer/play-by-play broadcaster.

“I am graduating out of a school not known for its sports or sports media/journalism. I really did not think I would be in line for a job in the industry coming out of college, so for me to not only have work BEFORE graduation, but work in the broadcasting industry is a huge deal and step in my broadcasting career,” Statz enthuses.

Statz joined STAA in February. He learned of the KROX opening six weeks later. “I found out about the job through STAA,” Statz recalls. “[STAA] had sent out information regarding potential openings in Minnesota, which was perfect for me because, as a Wisconsin resident, I didn’t want to move too far right off the bat.”

Statz cites two things that were especially helpful in his pursuit of his new opportunity. “First, it was absolutely joining STAA,” he grins. “Without it, I would not have even learned of the opening. It is the main reason I was able to find this line of work. Secondly, it was getting involved with my college’s radio station, WWSP 90FM. I started broadcasting for them three years ago, and became the Sports Director in May of 2024. This allowed me to go to the Wisconsin Broadcaster Association’s student forum where I was awarded second place for best play-by-play in both the Radio and TV categories, something that I used on my resume to land me my current opportunity.”

Now, with diploma soon in hand and a microphone ready, Statz is proving that preparation and the right resources can open doors—even in a competitive industry. His sportscasting journey is just beginning, but it’s off to a strong start.
