When the Columbia Fireflies take the field for their inaugural season, a former Jim Nantz Award winner will be describing the action. STAA’s Kevin Fitzgerald is the team’s Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations.
The Fireflies are the Class-A affiliate of the New York Mets.
“Kevin is a great young talent and Fireflies fans across the Midlands, the US and all over the world will enjoy his broadcast style,” says team President John Katz. “He’s a spectacular addition to our front office.”
Fitzgerald spent the 2015 baseball season as the assistant director of broadcasting and media relations with the Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Midwest League. He graduated from Syracuse University in 2014 with a degree in broadcast journalism. While at Syracuse, Fitzgerald was the Assistant Sports Director and play-by-play voice of Syracuse football, basketball and lacrosse on WAER 88.3 FM. In May of 2014, he won the Jim Nantz Award from Sportscasters Talent Agency of America and was named the nation’s most outstanding collegiate sportscaster.
Fitzgerald currently serves as a college basketball play-by-play broadcaster for ESPN and is the voice of The Citadel’s football telecasts on ESPN3. He called the action of the Bulldogs’ 2015 season that culminated to the FCS playoffs for the first time in 23 years.
