(June 18, 2012) A good reference always helps a job application, and it may even make you a candidate for a position for which you haven’t even applied. Ian Dooley had just such a reference recommend him to a station; Now he has a new job. An STAA client since June 2012, Dooley is joining WSRQ in Sarasota, FL.
WSRQ was looking to expand its sports programming when they contacted Dooley for an application.
“Matt Sammon, Manager of Radio Programming for the Tampa Bay Lightning (one of my references and a very nice guy) recommended me as someone they should call to get high school football and sports programming going.”
In addition to Sammon’s recommendation, Dooley’s method of application also helped him land the job. “A big reason I got the job is from my [STAA] Talent Page,” Dooley says.
Dooley’s first task will be to get a local high school to the table and arrange to broadcast all their games for the upcoming season. Also on the docket: hosting a coach’s show, the possibility of his own weekly sports show, and sales.
“I’m looking forward to doing a lot of different things that the position will offer: play-by-play, talk show, sales.”
Dooley is also anxious to begin cultivating relationships with professional athletes, coaches, and managers.
“The number one thing I look forward to will be the access that this job gives me. We are a Rays and Lightning affiliate and I will get media credentials to get onto the field and locker rooms of the big leagues.”
Dooley was previously the baseball and basketball voice for Eckerd College.
