(August 23, 2013) Derek Diesner is saddling up and heading west on the long haul to Yuma, AZ. An STAA client, Diesner has been hired as Play-by-Play Broadcaster and Sports Information Director at Arizona Western Community College.
Broadcast duties include radio, TV and Internet broadcasts of football, men’s and women’s basketball and five other sports. Diesner will also host a weekly half-hour coaches show.
“Something that really excited me about their program was that their student athletes excel both on and off the field,” Diesner says. “Knowing they are great students as well as athletes really attracted me to the school and the position. This job intrigued me because it would give me the opportunity to call games for all eight intercollegiate sports.”
Diesner replaces fellows STAA client Jim Howell, who left to pursue other opportunities. Howell recommended the school use STAA to help fill the position.
“A school administrator sent us the position description and we forwarded it to our Premier members,” says STAA CEO Jon Chelesnik.
An STAA client since 2011, Diesner is winding down a season of media relations with minor league baseball’s Charleston RiverDogs. The experience helped him land the position with AWC, as did some of his contacts in Charleston.
“Not only did I learn a lot on the media relations side but I was able to network with individuals whom work for both The Citadel and Charleston Southern University. When this position at AWC came open, the three men I dealt with daily were there to give me guidance on how to handle the process of securing this position.”
Now, what Diesner is really looking forward to is getting out into the community.
“I can’t wait to call all of the action of Matador sports this season, but I am also extremely excited to spread the word and help strengthen the bond between the city and Arizona Western College to continue to expand the fan base.”
