(September 2, 2015) When the Chadron State College football team kicks off its season Thursday evening in Rolla, MO., the Eagles will have a new play-by-play announcer.
The new “Voice of the Eagles” is STAA member Dave Collins, who comes to KQSK-FM radio (97.5) in Chadron after spending more than 10 years as the news and sports director at KSID Radio in Sidney.
“I’m honored to be the voice of Chadron State sports,” Collins said. “There are some really great things happening in athletics here, and I’m excited to be a part of ‘Eagle Country.'”
He said college football, college basketball and major league baseball are his favorite sports, in that order.
Collins grew up in Metro Denver and wrote sports for the newspaper and worked on the yearbook staff at the high school he attended. He then majored in journalism and had a minor in history at the University of Colorado in Boulder, graduating in 2004. A few months later, he began working in Sidney.
During his time in Sidney, he did play-by-play for more than 900 athletic contests.
Collins said he will travel with the Chadron State football and basketball teams and call their games both home and away. He also will do play-by-play for select volleyball matches this fall and softball games in the spring, including some that are on the road.
During the football season, Collins also will moderate the Jay Long Show on Monday evenings and have a show with the coaches of the other sports on Tuesday evenings.
All the CSC football games will be aired on KQSK based in Chadron and KAAQ in Alliance.
While selling the advertising since moving to Chadron, he met most of the broadcasts’ sponsors.
Collins replaces John Axtell, who was the Eagles’ play-by-play announcer for 27 years and is now the news director at KCSR Radio, the AM station in Chadron.
