(July 25, 2013) Just three years after graduating, Justin Allegri has been hired to do play-by-play at his alma mater. An STAA client, Allegri is the new football and men’s basketball voice at San Jose State University.
“San Jose State is a wonderful opportunity for me to expand my broadcasting experience,” says Allegri. “This will be the fourth different sport that I have covered a full season of. At this stage of my young career, it is the perfect step to keep me advancing.”
A 2010 graduate of San Jose State, Allegri follows fellow STAA client Michael Spero as Voice of the Spartans. He will earn his master’s degree from the school later this year. “I have been working in athletics as a graduate assistant for the last three years. While there, I have been able to expand my knowledge and skills, not only in broadcasting, but in video editing, story writing, and various other areas that I feel are crucial in my growth of the profession.”
The Spartans position was one of three play-by-play jobs announced in June at STAA’s One Day Ticket to Sportscasting Success seminar. However, Allegri learned of the opportunity through an SJSU athletics administrator. He has been an STAA client since 2011.
“STAA has been an integral part of my progression in the business. From tips about broadcasting, to job postings — the people at STAA are dedicated to making you the best you can be. Trying to make it as a broadcaster is tough. It is nice to know that you aren’t alone. STAA provides that confidence and experience.
Allegri takes over as the voice that is coming off an 11-2 season and a No. 21 national ranking.
“I am really looking forward to broadcasting for a team that is on the rise. Last season San Jose State worked incredibly hard to get the national attention they deserved. This season will be a true test to them with a new coach and conference. Broadcasting those story lines is what excites me most.
“It is such an honor to be named the voice of my alma mater. I recognize that this is a very unique chance for me to call games for the team that I have the most passion for. So much of getting a job like this is about timing and networking. I feel fortunate that I can be a Spartan now long after I graduate.”
