Three local sports media members were let go from their positions at AM 850/WKNR (ESPN Cleveland) Tuesday afternoon.
Cleveland Browns beat reporter Will Burge, Cleveland Indians beat reporter T.J. Zuppe and on-air show host Kenny Roda were dismissed by the radio station, which is owned by Good Karma Broadcasting.
“I was a little surprised. I guess you can never be too surprised in this business when they say they want to meet with you about some big-picture changes,” Burge said in an interview with cleveland.com’s Glenn Moore.
“They expressed admiration for my talent. Management was really supportive about what they think I can do long term. But they said they wanted to move in a different direction. I have to give them a ton of love. They gave me a ton of opportunities. Maybe this is just them giving me an opportunity in a different way.”
Burge added he has received calls from other media outlets expressing their desire to hire him.
“I’ve gotten calls from a couple of different places. I’d like to get back in before Browns season begins. There’s a lot of interest in that for me. I want to take my time and make the next opportunity a good one for me and make the right decision.”
Roda worked at the station for 21 years.
