The Wheeling Nailers, the ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, are pleased to announce DJ Abisalih (ah-bih-sell-ah) as the team’s new Broadcasting and Media Relations Coordinator for the upcoming season. Abisalih becomes the new voice of the Nailers as the team’s radio broadcaster, and also will head up the coordination of the team’s community efforts, including player visits to schools and hospitals.
Abisalih, 24, joins the Nailers after spending the past two seasons with the Lewiston MAINEiacs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. During is time with Lewiston, DJ lead the team’s communications department and also was the team’s radio broadcaster. He spent one season in Lewiston working alongside former Nailers voice, Alex Reed, and eventually replaced Reed as Lewiston’s lead broadcaster (when Reed left the team to join the Nailers).
“I am ecstatic about being named the new voice for the Nailers,” Abisalih said. “This is an organization that has a strong and successful history, and I am very fortunate for this opportunity. He added, “I have heard wonderful things about the Ohio Valley and I look forward to becoming part of it. I am honored to once again follow in the footsteps of my good friend, Alex Reed.”
DJ Abisalih was born in Methuen, MA, but spent the majority of his life in Scarborough, ME. He attended the New England School of Communications, where he received an Associate of Science Degree in Sports Broadcasting. Also during that time and since, Abisalih has been a fixture with the Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox), where he has done everything from broadcasting games, to selling tickets, and even working the concession stands.
“We anticipate another very exciting season and DJ’s strong work ethic and enthusiasm should really help to further energize Nailers Nation throughout it all,” said team co-owner Jim Brooks.
Abisalih will call his first game for the Nailers on Friday, October 14th, when they begin the regular season on the road against the Greenville Road Warriors, whom the Nailers knocked out of the second round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs last season in OT of Game 7.
The Nailers Radio Network will broadcast all 72 Nailers games, home and away on The MIX 97.3 FM as well as on the team’s website, wheelingnailers.com. The MIX 97.3 FM will also carry the Nailers Power Hour each week on Monday night starting at 6pm live from Generations Pub in Fulton.
